Welfare & Government Support

image

The NZ government has many initiatives to help hardworking families with additional funds and money to support your living.

Common Benefits:

Working for Families

This is a well known welfare benefit category that many people get. It is generally designed to help families with young children, and that do not have a high income. You can complete a basic assessment online. https://www.ird.govt.nz/wff-tax-credits/understanding/

Accommodation Supplement

This type of benefit can help people with their cost if they rent, board or have a mortgage. It also depends on matters such as your family’s income, and the different money or assets you have. https://www.workandincome.govt.nz/products/a-z-benefits/accommodation-supplement.html

Housing NZ HomeStart Grant

This provides up to $20,000 for a couple to get a first house purchase. It is a one-off grant and therefore it does not need to be paid back.

Student Allowance

A student allowance can help with your financial expenses and living costs. You do not have to pay this money back. https://www.studylink.govt.nz/products/a-z-products/student-allowance/index.html

Other Types:

Tax Refunds

Tax refunds are not a type of ‘welfare’ but it can mean that you can get a few hundred dollars extra every year – possibly more. There is more information about this online or you can also consider speaking to a tax refund agency or accountant if this may qualify.

ACC

ACC can provide some form of an income supplement if a person has experienced an accident and qualifies to claim. The policy is quite strict though.
